By using the Query Builder function, you can restrict your search to utterances produced by certain kinds of speakers, for example men, speakers with a particular accent or of a certain age. To search for dear spoken by a man:

1. Open the Query Builder (from the File menu, choose New and then Query Builder or click on the Query Builder icon). The Query Builder window opens.
2. Click in the Scope node (the left-hand, black box where it says <bncDocs>) A new window pops up.
3. Choose <SGML>. A new window opens.
4. In the top of this SGML window you see a list. Click on u. A list appears in the Attributes part of the SGML window .
5. Select who.sex and then Add. Select m from the list that pops up and then click on OK.
6. Back in the SGML window you click OK to return to the Query Builder window.
7. Click in the right hand, red box. Choose Edit and then Phrase. A box markedPhrase Querypops up.
8. Type dear into the Phrase Query box and click OK.
9. Back in the Query Builder window, you click on OK to start the search.
