Installation Problems
This section contains descriptions of problems reported to the BNC and suggested solutions. I
For users with certain non-English versions of Windows (for example Japanese or Chinese)
If the full path to any part of your BNC installation includes Unicode characters (i.e. non-ASCII), the current
windows client will fail to start. In other words, if the corpus and Xaira are installed into a folder or directory
with a name in non-English characters, the Xaira program will not start. When you decide where to install the
corpus, please select a location that only has English characters in its address. For example: C:\ BNC-XML\
will work fine but C:\Documents and Settings\ylva\Japanese characters\BNC-XML\ will not because it
has non-ASCII characters in the address/path.
To solve:Re-install the corpus and Xaira into a different location, for example directly under C:\.
If you are having problems starting the Xaira program, please check the bnc-install.log file that
has been created during the installation. That will include the address/path to where the corpus has been
installed (for example C:\Documents and Settings\ylva\Desktop\BNC-XML\ ). If that address contains non-English
characters, Xaira will have difficulties finding the right files and open the corpus.
To solve: Re-install the corpus and Xaira into a different location, for example directly under C:\.
