Search for utterances spoken by a woman/man/child

If you are interested in looking at socio-linguistic features of spoken language, you can make use of the information about speakers that is linked to each utterance. To find all utterances by a particular kind of speaker, use the XML Query function. This is usefully combined with another search (using Query Builder) to, for example, find all occurrences of a word or phrase spoken by a woman/man/child etc.

Identifying all utterances spoken by a specific type of speaker

  1. From the File menu, choose New query and then XML (or click on the XML query icon marked </>). The XML query window opens.
  2. From the list displayed in the XML window, select U (to see features associated with utterances).
  3. In the Attributes panel below, click on who.sex for speaker sex, who.age for speaker age group and so on and then on the Add from list... button. A list with existing codes is displayed.
  4. Select the category you want to search for and click OK to start the search.
The XML Query described here above will find all utterances spoken by the chosen type of speaker. To search for a word or phrase spoken by this type of speaker, use the Query Builder.
